As Britain makes the most of its mini-heatwave, how can you dress to look good, feel good and enjoy the sun?
- Dress lightweight not skinny! Certain fabrics make you sweat more and that not only makes you hotter, it’s really not a good look to be dripping and have sweat-rings on your clothing – the key is that thin fabrics only keep you cooler if they are also loose fitting – thing fabric and tight fit add up to constriction which leads to extra sweat production. For women, flowing floaty dresses look great – for men a lightweight shirt worn over shorts is good.
- Make sure you have the right accessories – this year’s sunglasses may only be subtly different to last years but wearing last year’s fashion looks really sad. Make sure your glasses have a good sunfilter, as well as looking good. Pick good sandals (and no socks) or trainers if you’re wearing shorts. Ensure that summer vests are fresh and not baggy from long wear under sweatshirts during the winter.
- Choose lighter colours and accent them with darker ones. Pale colours reflect back heat and keep you looking and feeling cooler. Cream, beige, white and so on are ideal for sunshine and can be make dramatic by the addition of a small amount of a deep colour such as navy blue, grey or red. So wear a white polo shirt with red trim to get the best out of the contrast.
